Some people are just ahead of their time.
An Australian friend wrote to me about Victoria Woodhull, who was
a prostitute, spiritualist, Wall St broker, publisher of a national newspaper,
ran for President of the United States against Ulysses S.Grant and Horace Greeley in 1872.
Her platform was free love, short skirts, abolition of the death penalty, vegetarianism, excess-profit taxes, birth control, better public housing, easier divorce laws, world government and female orgasm
I had never heard of her, but she isn’t another great woman erased from history, although I’m sure the ‘boys’ did their best. Try googling for Victoria Woodhull, and there are a couple of hundred entries in Google Images
She ran for President when women still did not have the vote. It would be fascinating to see someone of her calibre and platform running today, with the advantage of the web.
And by the way, she ended her life as the widow of an English banker.
Philip,
Excellent Find. Perhaps you also wish to open up a site to “reclaim unclaimed hero’s” … you seem to have something of a knack for it….
Kind Regards
