Of course I’d heard of Cory Doctorow, but I’ve never read him. I like science fiction films but not science fiction literature as a rule. But now I just might read Mr Doctorow. This is what he has to say on his download page:

The entire text of my novel is available as a free download in a variety of standards-defined formats. No crappy DRM, no teasers, just the whole damned book. If you want to get the book between covers, check out all the fine bookstores where you can buy it.

I think that’s an excellent idea. I’ve made all my published verse freely available, but with copyright restrictions. I want to make them copyleft but haven’t yet found the time to work out the Creative Commons licences.
The standards defined formats are the tricky part. XML etc. Hmm. Mr Doctorow has managed to get volunteers to put it into different formats. Then again his blog Boing Boing is one of the most popular on the web. Still … you can see he has me thinking.
